This on-chain generative collection of ocean inspired art is designed to evolve over time. What that on-chain evolution will look like is meant to be a mystery. The art will remain true to its zone while the chain decides its appearance. After several months of evolution, sometime in early December 2026 the On-Chain Ocean Collection will be frozen — a static image of each piece generated at that moment and used to create a 1/1 signed print, claimable only by the holder of its digital twin. If a piece isn't claimed it will not be produced in physical form. As a traditional artist I wanted to capture a moment in time where I interacted with this body of work in a physical manner after its generative digital creation.~Jelani

Nine Depths

From the surface bloom to the hadal trench. Each depth a distinct world, pulled from a unique seed the same block you cast your line.

Nine Creatures

One creature per depth tier. One of each, ever. Surfaced at random from the trawl — no collector can choose which depth yields a creature. The contract guarantees all nine will come up before the trawl closes. Every species is peer-reviewed marine biology — verified against NOAA, FishBase, and MBARI.

T8 · Surface Bloom
Man O' War
Physalia physalis
Not a jellyfish. A colony of four types of organism acting as one. Cannot swim. Goes where the ocean takes it. Tentacles reach 50 metres.
T7 · Shoreline
Hawksbill Turtle
Eretmochelys imbricata
Critically Endangered. Navigating oceans for 100 million years. Eats sea sponges toxic to every other animal. Returns to its birth beach to nest.
T6 · Reef
Lionfish
Pterois volitans
13 venomous dorsal spines. Invasive in the Atlantic with no natural predators. Can reduce native reef fish populations by 79%. Native to the Indo-Pacific.
T5 · Mesopelagic
Viperfish
Chauliodus sloani
Fangs too large to fit inside its own mouth. Counter-illumination photophores along the belly mimic downwelling light to vanish from predators below.
T4 · Deep Ocean
Lanternfish
Family Myctophidae
The most abundant vertebrate on Earth by biomass. Performs the largest daily animal migration on the planet — hundreds of metres, every single night.
T3 · Midnight Zone
Anglerfish
Order Lophiiformes
The lure is lit by symbiotic bacteria — Photobacterium kishitanii — not the fish itself. The male fuses permanently to the female, sharing her bloodstream.
T2 · Bioluminescent
Vampire Squid
Vampyroteuthis infernalis
Neither squid nor octopus. Its own order: Vampyromorphida. Does not hunt — eats marine snow, the slow drift of dead matter from above. A living fossil.
T1 · Abyss
Giant Tube Worm
Riftia pachyptila
No mouth. No digestive system. Feeds entirely through chemosynthetic bacteria in its trophosome. Discovered 1977 by Alvin. Grows to 2.4 metres.
T0 · Ghost Tide · Rarest
Mariana Snailfish
Pseudoliparis swirei
Deepest fish ever recorded — 8,336 metres. Not bioluminescent. Survives 800 atmospheres. Its bones would dissolve at surface pressure. Utterly alone.

All nine depths.
One animal.

The Genesis piece contains every depth in this collection layered into a single composition. At its centre, a sperm whale descends head-first through all nine zones.

The sperm whale is the only animal on Earth that traverses every tier in this collection — from the surface bloom where it breathes, to the hadal zone where it hunts. It carries light from the surface into the dark. It is the only animal alive that knows all nine depths.

Jelani Sasso is a painter and digital artist from Anguilla, British West Indies. Working in acrylic, oil, and mixed media, his practice moves between the tactile permanence of physical canvas and the emergent possibilities of generative code. He is the founder of The Art Bar — a gallery and creative studio in Anguilla where traditional painting, sculpture, and digital work share the same floor.

On-chain Ocean is Sasso's first fully generative digital collection. The same instinct that drives his painting — the preservation of something true — drives the decision to place this art permanently inside the Ethereum blockchain. No servers. No IPFS. The art lives in bytecode. The bytecode lives in the block. The block is permanent.

Sasso is also a restorative artist and educator — his work in preservation, restoring form and returning dignity, threads through everything he makes. In his hands, permanence is not an aesthetic choice. It is a philosophy.

Generative SVG · SMIL animation · Solidity 0.8.35 · Ethereum Mainnet · 148KB on-chain bytecode

All nine creature descriptions peer-reviewed against NOAA, FishBase, and MBARI. Depth ranges, species names, and biological facts verified.

The art generates inside tokenURI(). If Ethereum runs, this collection renders. No external dependency can break it.
